EXTENDED BIO

Brandi Nicole Payne is a queer feminist storyteller, performer and survivor advocate whose work centers on Black women connecting with identity, exploring female sexuality, grappling with the complexities of motherhood and embracing liberation. A proud HBCU grad, HBO Writers Program alum, and member of RAINN’s Speakers Bureau, her goal as a writer, filmmaker and actor is to use story to spark discussion, create community and help facilitate healing.

Originally from Southern California, Brandi moved around often until finally settling in Vegas after being accepted into a performing arts high school. This non-military on-the-go upbringing has allowed her to make friends quickly and move between worlds with ease, an ability that’s served her well. A serial entrepreneur & side hustle queen since high school (shout-out to her loyal candy customers at Las Vegas Academy), she’s worked in multiple hospitality roles from wedding planner, cruise coordinator and custom cookie decorator to weightier gigs like crisis hotline volunteer, public speaker and middle school theatre teacher (which whew, only lasted a year, and the kids were NOT the problem).

While she started off as an actor, she fell in love with the storytelling process after writing & producing MUTED, a short film about media discrepancy when a child of color goes missing, that was acquired by HBO, selected for the Ryan Murphy Half Initiative Program and to date has just over 165k views on YouTube via Issa Rae’s #ShortFilmSundays. She followed that up by making ALOHA, a short film that was awarded the Emergence Filmmaker Grant and was based in part on her experience of developing H.E.L.L.P. Syndrome, a life-threatening complication, while pregnant with her third child. Since then, Brandi has worked in various support staff roles including Showrunner’s Assistant on CURVES (BET) and as the Writers’ Assistant for YOUR HONOR (Showtime) and HAPPY FACE (Paramount+) where she recently co-wrote episode 108.

Currently splitting her time between Memphis and Atlanta, she’s grateful for Zoom rooms until staffing takes her back to LA. Until then, when she’s not spending time with her sons, you can find Brandi pole dancing, baking fantastic cookies (seriously, they’re top two and she’s not #2), belting showtunes for Broadway shows she can’t wait till she can afford to see, and railing against white supremacy in all its insidious forms.
